Experience

I am passionate about science and STEM education. In 2014, I founded a mentorship group that works with high school students in the very underserved Coachella Valley area here in California, where we help students go to college and encourage pursuit of STEM degrees. I hope to be able to inspire future generations to follow scientists like myself into research and education. I have been teaching college level biology since 2011 at the University of California Riverside, and I have been tutoring multiple subjects including Biology, Chemistry, math, and reading over the last several months. I am very flexible with my teaching style. I believe in the importance of individualized education because I understand that everyone learns differently. If a student has difficulty learning a topic in one way, I will always try a different way. I also believe that students will learn more effectively if they are able to relate what they're learning to their own real life, so I often try to incorporate something to help students make those connections. My main research interests are stem cell biology and cancer, and I hope to become a researcher in a cancer or regenerative medicine institute following my postdoctoral training. Math is complex and there is no single way that works for all students to learn and understand math. I am very creative in coming up with different ways to explain a concept until a student understands. I have about a decade of training in biology, and 8 years of experience teaching various biology courses (Basic biology, Cancer Biology, Stem Cell Biology, Biology lab, Genetics, Cell Biology). Most aspects of biology and general chemistry go hand in hand with one another. I understand common pitfalls in these classes and I have creative ways to help students understand and remember the material that correspond with their learning style. I speak fluent Spanish but I have also gone through the classes so I understand how different levels are taught. Additionally, I have an excellent command of the English language, which enables me to help students relate what they are learning (Spanish) to what they already know (English).

Hobbies

Outside of science, I have many hobbies and interests. I love animals and have many pets of my own, both cats and dogs. I have played the violin since I was young, and enjoy and have played both mariachi and classical music. I also love to dance. I dance Ballet Folklorico (Mexican folk dance) with a local group. Obviously I am very proud if my Mexican heritage. I enjoy drawing and painting and crafty things, and I also enjoy building things. Finally, I love travel. I have been to many countries in Europe and I even lived in Bordeaux, France for a little while.
